DAY 4: SACRED VALLEY

In the morning you will visit the charming community of Chinchero. You will join a local weaving family in their courtyard for a first-hand experience of the Andean weaving process. You can watch as wool is carded, spun, and dyed and learn about the different techniques used to create belts, ponchos and shawls.

Later you will continue to the age-old terraced salt mines in Maras which cover the whole of the hill-side. Salt was extracted from these mines from Inca times and the same method has been used ever since – all work is done by hand. You will then head to Moray – circular terraces hidden among the hills which are similar to a Greek amphitheatre. Surrounded by an impressive backdrop of snow covered mountains, Moray was used as an open-air agricultural lab for adapting crops to different environmental conditions.

Then you will enjoy lunch in the fresh Andean air at Wayra restaurant, located in the stunning Sol y Luna hotel. Accompanied by Peruvian Paso horse riding demonstrations and Marinera dancers. (The show is not available between October & March).

DAY 5: MARAS & MORAY

The tour starts with a visit to the Colonial town of Maras and its church. From Maras we continue to the nearby Inca site of Moray, a magnificent series of terrace circles set into the ground which were once used by the Incas for experimentation with crops.

Our final destination are the salt mines which have been in use since Pre-Inca times. Water from a subterranean stream is channeled through pools where it evaporates and leaves behind pure salt crystals. With thousands of stark white pools stretching down the valley, the views are stunning.
